SBTi target approval

We are proud to announce that the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated our near-term greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets. This confirms that our goals align with the reductions recommended by the latest research in climate science, to restrict global warming to 1.5°C, positioning us as corporate leaders of the low-carbon transition.

The SBTi is a globally recognised organisation that helps companies set science-based emissions reduction targets and enables businesses and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis.

SBTi validation is important because it ensures that our climate targets are scientifically robust and aligned with the global effort to prevent the worst impacts of climate change. Our validated target reflects our dedication to sustainability and our proactive approach to reducing our environmental footprint. PPF commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 from a 2021 base year. We also commit to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel and energy-related activities, upstream transportation and distribution by 42% within the same time frame.

Reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement is a key priority for us. The accelerating impacts of climate change demand immediate and decisive action. From melting ice caps and rising sea levels to increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events, the effects are already being felt across the globe, posing significant risks to ecosystems, communities, and economies alike.

At PPF, we recognise our responsibility to be part of the solution. We are committed to taking meaningful steps to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and support the transition to a low-carbon future. By actively addressing our environmental impact, we aim to contribute to global climate mitigation efforts and help safeguard the planet for future generations.

Targets:

We are committed to:

  • Decrease our Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 42% by the end of 2030 on a 2021 baseline in accordance with our SBTi validated near-term emission reduction target.
  • Develop a detailed decarbonization roadmap by the end of 2026.
  • Achieve year-on-year increase in renewable electricity share.

Achievements:

  • Following the successful implementation of our first solar panel project at PPF Dunajský Klátov in 2023, a second project has been launched in Veselí nad Lužnicí, with more installations planned across other sites.
  • We continuously work on improving our methodology for GHG emissions calculations to have the most accurate and up-to-date data.
  • We introduced our first initiative focusing on biodiversity at PPF Nordics called ‘Forests and pollinators’ in 2024.
  • In 2024, we began using intermodal transport options, resulting in over 2,453 t CO2e emissions avoided.
  • We also use reusable pallets designed to withstand multiple trips. These pallets help reduce waste, lower resource consumption, and promote a circular economy.

PPF Nordics’ Environmental Initiative in Sweden

There is a distinct connection between climate change and the loss of biodiversity. At PPF, we recognize the importance of addressing these issues. The availability of food for both humans and animals depends on pollinators, which are under threat due to climate change, fewer flower-rich environments, and pesticide use. In response, PPF Nordics launched an environmental project in collaboration with Initiative 1415, focusing on climate compensation and biological diversity.

In Tväråträsk we preserved a forest, in Tanum we planted a new forest and in Bålsta we established an area for pollinators. This initiative aligns with the European Commission’s “A New Deal for Pollinators,” which was presented in January 2023.

Through our collaboration with Initiative 1415, PPF Nordics is taking meaningful steps to fight climate change and biodiversity loss. By compensating for emissions and enhancing pollinator habitats, we are making a significant impact on environmental sustainability. This initiative also supports broader efforts to maintain ecosystem resilience and food security.

Minimising our environmental footprint is central to our approach to resource use. Through responsible waste management and the optimisation of our packaging solutions, we aim to reduce material consumption and environmental impact. By working in close collaboration across industries and value chains, we seek to enhance product circularity and support the transition to a more resource-efficient, low-carbon economy.

The principles of the circular economy are fundamental to our sustainability strategy. We recognise that our largest sources emissions stem from ingredients and packaging, therefore these areas represent our greatest opportunities for improvement. As a result, we focus our efforts on reducing carbon emissions, managing waste more effectively, and continuously improving our packaging solutions.

Through these actions, we aim to conserve resources, cut emissions, and contribute to long-term climate resilience.

Targets:

We are committed to:

  • Ensure all packaging placed on the EU market complies with the requirements of the Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) by the applicable deadlines.

Achievements:

  • Along with daily waste management, we have kicked off the Zero Material Waste Project in 2021 to boost reduction
  • In 2024, we became the first private label pet food manufacturer who placed pet food in mono-material retort pouch packaging on the European market.
  • The packaging used for our wet products — such as metal cans and certain shrink-and-stretch foils — is already 100% recyclable.
  • Approximately 90% FSC-certified paper packaging.
  • We began preparing for the implementation of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
  • We achieved full availability of sustainable and recyclable packaging materials in the dry category across all PPF sites.
