SBTi target approval

We are proud to announce that the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated our near-term greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets. This confirms that our goals align with the reductions recommended by the latest research in climate science, to restrict global warming to 1.5°C, positioning us as corporate leaders of the low-carbon transition.

The SBTi is a globally recognised organisation that helps companies set science-based emissions reduction targets and enables businesses and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis.

SBTi validation is important because it ensures that our climate targets are scientifically robust and aligned with the global effort to prevent the worst impacts of climate change. Our validated target reflects our dedication to sustainability and our proactive approach to reducing our environmental footprint. PPF commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 from a 2021 base year. We also commit to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel and energy-related activities, upstream transportation and distribution by 42% within the same time frame.

Reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement is a key priority for us. The accelerating impacts of climate change demand immediate and decisive action. From melting ice caps and rising sea levels to increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events, the effects are already being felt across the globe, posing significant risks to ecosystems, communities, and economies alike.

At PPF, we recognise our responsibility to be part of the solution. We are committed to taking meaningful steps to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and support the transition to a low-carbon future. By actively addressing our environmental impact, we aim to contribute to global climate mitigation efforts and help safeguard the planet for future generations.

Targets:

We are committed to decreasing our absolute GHG emissions across Scope 1, Scope 2, and applicable Scope 3 categories by 42% by the end of 2030 against a 2021 baseline in accordance with our SBTi validated near-term targets.

Achievements:

  • In 2023 we delivered a 3596 MWh reduction in energy consumption
  • Our first solar panel project at PPF Dunajský was also implemented in 2023
  • We introduced our first initiative focusing on biodiversity at PPF Nordics called ‘Forests and pollinators’ in 2024

PPF Nordics’ Environmental Initiative in Sweden

There is a distinct connection between climate change and the loss of biodiversity. At PPF, we recognize the importance of addressing these issues. The availability of food for both humans and animals depends on pollinators, which are under threat due to climate change, fewer flower-rich environments, and pesticide use. In response, PPF Nordics launched an environmental project in collaboration with Initiative 1415, focusing on climate compensation and biological diversity.

In Tväråträsk we preserved a forest, in Tanum we planted a new forest and in Bålsta we established an area for pollinators. This initiative aligns with the European Commission’s “A New Deal for Pollinators,” which was presented in January 2023.

Through our collaboration with Initiative 1415, PPF Nordics is taking meaningful steps to fight climate change and biodiversity loss. By compensating for emissions and enhancing pollinator habitats, we are making a significant impact on environmental sustainability. This initiative also supports broader efforts to maintain ecosystem resilience and food security.

Minimising our environmental footprint is central to our approach to resource use. Through responsible waste management and the optimisation of our packaging solutions, we aim to reduce material consumption and environmental impact. By working in close collaboration across industries and value chains, we seek to enhance product circularity and support the transition to a more resource-efficient, low-carbon economy.

The principles of the circular economy are fundamental to our sustainability strategy. We recognise that our largest sources of environmental impact and associated emissions stem from packaging and ingredients, and these areas therefore represent our greatest opportunities for improvement. As a result, we focus our efforts on reducing carbon emissions across these stages, managing operational food waste more effectively, and continuously improving our packaging solutions.

Through these actions, we aim to conserve resources, cut emissions, and contribute to long-term climate resilience.

Targets:

  • Ensuring 100% of our dry portfolio’s own-sourced packaging material is recyclable by the end of 2024.
  • Initiating development projects for all externally sourced packaging materials that are not recyclable by the end of 2025.
  • Ensuring 100% of our pouch packaging is recyclable or made from recycled materials by the end of 2030.
  • Reducing operational food waste by 30% by the end of 2025 and 50% by the end of 2027 against a 2021 baseline.

Achievements:

  • Along with daily waste management, we have kicked off the Zero Material Waste Project in 2021 to boost reduction
  • 12 Waste Walks have been run across our sites so far
  • We have achieved a 7.7% reduction in total waste in 2023 compared to our baseline in 2021
  • As of 2023, 28% of our dry packaging is recyclable
